Due to the fact that there already are some free Mellotron sample packs available on the internet I wanted to give the famous tape sampler another twist. I layered some samples and imported them as wavetables into Xfer’s flagship synth Serum, adjusted some settings and made a free preset pack combining the best of anlog and digital. Back in the seventies I owned a Mellotron M400. I have tried all the free clones. Not only does this VST render a decent emulation of the original, it also has full MIDI learn and remote control of it's parameters from your MIDI keyboard controller. Another wonderful offering from Elektrostudio. The two sample maps used for producing sound may also be replaced to fit other needs. (Will upload further Mellotron sample maps in the near future.) Note: the original Mellotron had a key range of G2 through F5 - so playing keys above or below you are leaving the range of nice sound, as the tunes are now produced by simple transposition. Artifake Labs Redtron – Best Free Mellotron VST The Artifake Labs Redtron is modeled after the mellotron M400 as well. Something that’s nice with this plugin is that it’s free. I included it on my list because I truly believe it’s better than a lot of plugins that cost money.

Tapeotronic is a mellotron tape keyboard emulation.
There’s 16 patches of flute, string and choirs sounds and MIDI learn / automation.

Back a few years ago I made an album called Manasota under my pseudonym Justin Robert. For much of that album I used a Mellotron VST plugin. I’ve always loved the sound of these.

The one that I used is no longer available, but I found this one that seems just as good!

“The Mellotron is an electro-mechanical, polyphonic tape replay keyboard originally developed and built in Birmingham, England, in 1963. It evolved from a similar instrument, the Chamberlin, but could be mass-produced more effectively. The instrument works by pulling a section of magnetic tape across a head. Different portions of the tape can be played to access different sounds.

The original models were designed to be used in the home, and contained a variety of sounds, including automatic accompaniments. The bandleader Eric Robinson and television personality David Nixon were heavily involved in the instrument’s original publicity. A number of other celebrities such as Princess Margaret were early adopters.

The Mellotron became more popular after the Beatles used it on several tracks. It was subsequently adopted by the Moody Blues, Genesis and King Crimson, and became a notable instrument in progressive rock. Later models such as the M400, the best selling model, dispensed with the accompaniments and some sound selection controls in order to be used by touring musicians. The instrument became less popular in the 1980s due to the introduction of polyphonic synthesizers and samplers, despite a number of high profile uses from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and XTC.” Wikipedia

Ever loved the sound of the emerging 70s? King Crimson, Rick Wakeman, Yes? Then this may be an instrument for you.
Based on original 1973 Mellotron M400S strings and choir samples, it is basically a two-channel crossfading sampler with LFO and an array of effects.
The two sample maps used for producing sound may also be replaced to fit other needs. (Will upload further Mellotron sample maps in the near future.)
Note: the original Mellotron had a key range of G2 through F5 - so playing keys above or below you are leaving the range of nice sound, as the tunes are now produced by simple transposition.
Note 2: in order to get around this ridiculously low upload size limit imposed by NI, I had to use 7zip compression - so don't be surprised that upon unzipping you'll get a mellotron.7z instead of an .ens. use the 7zip GPL program by www.7-zip.org to decompress your ensemble. the Mac guys may use something like http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22774/the-unarchiver (sorry, 7zip is a Windows application. but I'm sure you'll fix it;-)
